The Paranoyds Announce New Album ‘Carnage Bargain’

    image

WATCH “GIRLFRIEND DEGREE” PREMIERE ON PAPER

    PREORDER CARNAGE BARGAIN ON LP/CD/DIG

The Paranoyds have made a name for themselves as one of the most exciting Los Angeles bands since forming in 2015, playing festivals like Coachella and touring with the likes of DIIV, Albert Hammond Jr., Sunflower Bean, and BRONCHO. Today the band finally announce their long-awaited debut album, Carnage Bargain—a raucous blend of garage rock grit, new wave swagger, classic horror film soundtrack campiness, and a myriad of other left-of-center influences. The exhilarating ten-track LP will be released via Suicide Squeeze on September 13th – pre-order HERE.

The Paranoyds are on tour now with Tacocat, and will join White Reaper on tour this Fall. See below to find a show near you, and get your tickets HERE.

To celebrate the album announce, The Paranoyds share the record’s lead single “Girlfriend Degree.” A mid-tempo stomper of clap-along beats, fuzz guitar leads, and call-to-arms vocals described by the band as an ode to “being a badass woman who’s taking time to make sure she’s doing things for herself,” “Girlfriend Degree” makes the band’s mission to reject the status quo clear on this initial track. Read a bit more about the track below, and watch the Ambar Navarro-directed (Cuco, Soccer Mommy, Stef Chura) music video over at PAPER HERE.

“‘Girlfriend Degree’ is a call to arms, a reminder to be a supremely self-loving woman, to just do you. There’s all this pressure about being ‘the ideal woman,’ and it’s easy to get caught up in that—to spend your time trying to be all these things that others think you should be. Getting a ‘girlfriend degree’ is about settling, selling oneself short and not believing in yourself—valuing your partner’s beliefs or opinions over your own. It’s cool to be a girlfriend or wife or whatever, but there’s so much more to being a woman than that. This desire to be above that is also somewhat a telling of how our band came to be. We were all going to a bunch of shows and obviously having a great time and it took us a bit for us to realize that we could also make and perform our own music….and that nothing was preventing us from doing that besides ourselves. We all have power and we should use that power to exercise our own agency.

“We’re living in the dystopian future. Our lives are completely tracked and programmed, our extension of ourselves is a handheld computer with a microphone and camera that stays on while were unaware, and, on top of everything, the extreme right is gaining continuous world power,” The Paranoyds explains of its name. “What isn’t there to be paranoyd about?”

It’s ironic that the band’s moniker winds up being an apt summary of the band’s general outlook on technology and modern culture given that The Paranoyds’ humble beginnings can be traced back to a friendship forged between Staz Lindes(bass/vocals) and Laila Hashemi (keys/vocals) over Myspace in their early teens. Bonded by a shared interest in local underground music, the pair eventually moved their online friendship into the real world. Laila’s childhood friend Lexi Funstonwas brought into the fold and the first vestiges of The Paranoyds began to take shape. “We would all go to our friends’ shows and it hit us that we could start a band and play shows too,” Funston says. With the addition of drummer David Ruiz in 2015, the band found the perfect personnel for their sonic balance of jubilant energy and foreboding undercurrents.

Carnage Bargain captures this chemistry perfectly—channeling the genre-mashing weirdness of guitar-and-keyboard provocateurs like The Intelligence on tracks like “Laundry,” the fever-dream kitsch of early B-52s on “Ratboy,” krautrock’s motorik groove on “Hungry Sam,” and the beguiling pop of Blondie on the sweet-and-salty highlight “Courtney.” The band may indeed be paranoid, but they offer a solution to our modern ills through the simple act of being an inspiring, independent, and unflappable musical force.

Swim Through SadGirl’s Latest Song, “Water”

    image

LISTEN TO “WATER” PREMIERE ON FLOOD MAGAZINE

    PREORDER WATER ON LP/CD/DIG

LA pop/rock trio SadGirl released a new single/album track title “Water” ahead of their forthcoming debut LP Water out June 14th. “Water” is a sparse acoustic-driven song by guitarist/vocalist Misha Lindes’ reflective vocals. It’s about realizing your own mortality and changing nature. SadGirl just wrapped up a west coast tour this month and play their hometown record release show July 11th at Teragram Ballroom. Ticket info here.

“The track has a Sgt. Pepper meets Arctic Monkeys vibe, made personal with a lo-fi feel, strummed acoustic guitars, and subtly symphonic flourishes.” - FLOOD Magazine

    Guitarist/Vocalist Misha Lindes on “Water”:

“This is probably one of the most honest / personal songs I’ve written. It was initially just a home demo I recorded for myself, and when I finished tracking it had kind of opened up a new creative door for me musically. It’s my favorite song on the record and also probably the saddest song on the record. It’s about self reflection and being honest with yourself and asking yourself if what’s made you happy in the past still makes you feel the same way.”

“Miss Me” - SadGirl Share New Song From Debut LP, ‘Water’

    image

LISTEN TO “MISS ME” PREMIERE ON TINY MIX TAPES

    PRE-ORDER WATER ON LP/CD/DIG

L.A. rock trio SadGirl are back with another single from their debut album Water, out June 14th. “Miss Me” is a classic tormented love song that transports the listener back to wholesome slow dances at a previous generation’s sock hop, only to be subverted by a chorus of “miss me with that bullshit.”

SadGirl guitarist/vocalist Misha Lindes explains “Miss Me”:

“This song is about realizing someone close to you isn’t the person you thought you knew and kind of coming to terms with the fact that they may never share the same values as you. Getting to that point where you decide that it’s no longer worth the effort and it’s better to walk away with what’s important to you still in tact.”

With their new album Water, Los Angeles trio SadGirl taps into the romantic and nostalgic spirit of their native city while exuding a time-tested authenticity suggesting they’ve had a peek behind the curtain of the glitzy boulevards and relentless sunshine. It’s a collection of breezy pop songs captured with the timbre of old-time recording techniques. Songs like “Little Queenie” touch upon the yesteryear reverberations and longing of a Ken Boothe ballad. Similarly, a tormented love song like “Miss Me” transports the listener back to slow dances at a previous generation’s sock hop, only to be subverted by a chorus of “miss me with that bullshit.” It’s as if guitarist/vocalist Misha Lindes, drummer David Ruiz, and bassist Dakota Peterson want to conjure an idealized past only to remind us of innocence lost.

“If you want to learn about water, go to the desert.” It’s a piece of wisdom that made an impact on Lindes. “Here we are in Los Angeles, a desert, ping-ponging between drought and El Niño. This record is an attempt to share a small portion of my experience growing up and living here,” said Lindes. “It’s basically about the fluidity of water and its power and importance.”

Suicide Squeeze is proud to offer up SadGirl’s Water to the world on June 14, 2019. The album is available on CD, digital formats, and an initial vinyl pressing of 500 Reverse Osmosis (Blue Galaxy) color vinyl (label exclusive).

The Paranoyds Share “Hungry Sam” Video, Announce EP

    image

WATCH “HUNGRY SAM” PREMIERE ON V MAGAZINE

    PREORDER HUNGRY SAM EP VINYL/DIGITAL

Suicide Squeeze is thrilled to announce the signing of The Paranoyds! We’re honored to have the Los Angeles-based group as a part of our roster. Today, we’re also celebrating the release of the band’s new video, “Hungry Sam” for the namesake EP out July 12th! Watch the video premiere via V Magazine [LINK].

Your phone, your TV, your computer - who (or what) is watching you? It’s an oft-asked question in the digital age, and one that The Paranoyds echoed when it comes to the origins of their name. Part of a generation immersed in oversharing and ease of surveillance, The Paranoyds know better than anyone, it’s scary out there. But the band’s fearless pursuit of a good time won’t stop them from crafting the kind of gritty, Southern California garage rock that refuses to hide.

The Paranoyds’ debut release on Suicide Squeeze offers a taste of what The Paranoyds have been crafting. The Los Angeles four-piece of Laila Hashemi (keyboardist-vocals), Lexi Funston (guitars/vocals),Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) and David Ruiz (drums, vocals) share a mission to craft songs with the gritty spunk and dark playfulness of a cult-classic splatter film. “Hungry Sam” is a binge-worthy feast of chugging guitars and belly-rounded drums. B-side “Trade Our Sins” is a cautionary slowdance fit for the end of the night or the end of the world. Their self-described “sister vocal act” shares the snarling, over-it-but-totally-into-it vocals throughout their songs, moving from dirty surf-pop guitar jams to power-packed garage rock.

Suicide Squeeze Records is excited to celebrate the signing of The Paranoyds with “Hungry Sam” b/w “Trade Our Sins” out July 12, 2019. The 7” is a one-time pressing of 750, 650 on Orange Crush color vinyl, and 100 on Neon Yellow (artist exclusive) color vinyl.

SHOP THE DEVIL YOU KNOW LP/CD/CS/DIG

The Coathangers have added a new run of US dates to their ever-expanding tour in support of new album The Devil You Know, released last month on Suicide Squeeze. In celebration, the band have shared a new Matt Odom-directed video for album stand-out “Stranger Danger.“

Vocalist and drummer Stephanie Luke says of the song: “Stranger Danger is a song about avoiding the negative people in one’s life, like when your mother used to tell you ‘stranger danger!’ so you wouldn’t go off with the bad guys. The video is dark with flashes of light (actual flashlights) to invoke that feeling of the unknown. Then we have our ever so good sport of a friend [and album artwork artist/frequent collaborator] Scott Montoya, whom we’ve kidnapped and continue to ‘terrorize’ throughout the video, so we in fact have become the dangerous strangers. This was one of our favorites to make with our amazingly talented videographer Matt Odom, enjoy!”

SadGirl Announce Debut LP Water, Share “Chlorine” Video

    LISTEN TO “CHLORINE”

America is restless. And in the Golden State of California, the veneer of optimism and unlimited opportunity hides a countryside teetering on the edge of the Pacific. The hillside mansions risk burning in the wildfires while the views from oceanfront properties remind their owners that one tectonic shift will sink it all. Surely the people who built Los Angeles on the desert landscape were aware of the delicate balance of their surroundings, but hope springs eternal. And indeed, LA became a place of dreams realized, even though Mother Nature and the hands of fate often destroyed those dreams. LA’s SadGirl are acutely aware of that reality, and their analog rock n’ roll has always somehow managed to approximate the relentless optimism of the pioneer spirit, but they’ve also exuded some degree of self-awareness of the anodyne properties of vintage pop. With their new album Water, the Los Angeles trio taps into the romantic and nostalgic spirit of their native city while exuding a time-tested authenticity suggesting that they’ve had a peek behind the curtain of the manicured lawns, glitzy boulevards, and relentless sunshine.

“If you want to learn about water, go to the desert.” It’s a little nugget of wisdom imparted from SadGirl’s recording engineer and friend Max Garland, but it made an impact on guitarist/vocalist Misha Lindes. “Here we are in Los Angeles, a desert, ping-ponging between drought and El Niño. This record is just an attempt to share a very small portion of my experience growing up and living here,” Lindes says about the album. “It’s basically just about the fluidity of water and its power and importance.” But Water isn’t a musical adaptation of a Frank Herbert novel, it’s a collection of breezy, upbeat pop songs captured with the timbre of old-time recording techniques. Songs like “Little Queenie” touch upon the cadence, yesteryear reverberations, and soulful longing of a Ken Boothe ballad. It’s a song for afternoons in the sun, not reflections on our mortality. Similarly, a classic tormented love song like “Miss Me” nearly transports the listener back to wholesome slow dances at a previous generation’s sock hop, only to be subverted by a chorus of “miss me with that bullshit.” It’s as if guitarist/vocalist Misha Lindes, drummer David Ruiz, and bassist Dakota Peterson want to conjure an idealized past only to remind us of our loss of innocence.

"Chlorine” similarly plays at our emotions, busting out a Sam Cooke-style love song where the muse is equally seductive and poisonous. Much like the reverb and vibrato-drenched instrumental “Hazelnut Coffee”, these upbeat melodies and antiquated sounds seem to reference some earlier era, and would almost feel subservient to some long-gone ideal if they didn’t feel at odds with Los Angeles’ current digital amphetamine pulse. Any accusation that SadGirl’s penchant for classic sounds is rooted in escapism is completely voided by the closing track “Water”, a sparse acoustic song driven by Lindes’ reflective vocals. “It’s about realizing your own mortality and changing nature,” the songwriter notes. “It’s meant to be melancholy but still beautiful in its realization.”

Water was pieced together out of a series of recording sessions from the last two years using a variety of tape machines in a variety of environments—from living rooms to proper studios. Taken as a whole, they capture a band summoning the spirit of their surroundings in all its peaks and valleys. It’s a record steeped in the pop world of the past in order to create a contrast with our modern age. It’s a sugar-coated reminder of what we’ve lost, what we’ve never had, and what we’ll eventually lose.

Suicide Squeeze is proud to offer up SadGirl’s Water to the world on June 14, 2019. The album is available on CD, digital formats, and an initial vinyl pressing of 500 Reverse Osmosis color vinyl (label exclusive).
